What is rush?
Rush is a time in the beginning of each semester where interested participants, called “rushees”, get to learn more about the sorority, and also get to know the sisters better through events hosted by us. These events are fun, a great way to meet new people, and completely non-obligatory and free. We encourage and welcome anyone who is even slightly interested to come out and see what we’re all about!
What are the benefits to joining alpha Kappa Delta Phi?
Being a member of our sorority can offer many benefits. Joining a sorority can enhance your undergraduate life by: a) expanding your social and professional network b) allowing you to experience personal growth in dealing with a diverse group of women c) offering you a chance to challenge yourself in leadership roles d) creating friendships through sisterhood that will last a lifetime, and e) so much more!
Do I have to be Asian to join?
Definitely not. As an organization that seeks to promote cultural awareness, we hold the concept of equality in the highest regard. alpha Kappa Delta Phi does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, age, national origin, or sexual orientation. We are an all-inclusive sorority. Any woman who shares similar interests and values is encouraged to join regardless of their own cultural identity. alpha Kappa Delta Phi is composed of the diverse backgrounds and lifestyles of each individual sister. Each member adds her unique experience and spirit to the sorority, building the sisterhood that we are so proud of. We encourage ambitious and motivated women interested in enhancing their college years (and beyond) to attend recruitment or start a chapter.
Do I have to attend all rush events?
No, the minimum requirements to be eligible for an interview are specified on the event page. However, it is definitely recommended and encouraged to attend as many events as possible, because rush is a crucial time where you can ask questions about the sorority, get to know the sisters of aKDPhi, and also gives us a chance to get to know you better. This will aid you in deciding whether or not the sorority is right for you.
What happens after rush?
After interviews are finished, sisters will deliberate on whether or not a rushee will be given a “bid,” an invitation to join the sorority, and the rushee can then decide to accept or decline the bid. If accepted, the rushee will become a New Member and begin the new member process for aKDPhi.
Does aKDPhi haze?
No, aKDPhi and the University of Virginia has a strict no-hazing policy, we do not partake in harming any of our new members, as the new member process is an educational period for New Members to get to know the sisters on a better level, to learn more about the history, values, and traditions about the sorority, and to prepare them for the responsibilities of an active.
What is expected of a new member?
The purpose of sorority education consists of education about the sorority and chapter. New members should demonstrate a desire and ability to support alpha Kappa Delta Phi's sorority standards. Hazing, defined as "any action taken or situation created to produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment, or ridicule," is not condoned nor tolerated.
What is the new member process like and will it affect my grades?
Joining a sorority is an important decision to make, and does require a considerable amount of time commitment throughout the semester, very much like taking another academic course. However, as college students, the sisters of aKDPhi understand that academics are of utmost importance, and that they come first. Our actives can help you stay organized and manage your time so that you can maintain your grades, extracurriculars, and still be involved in the new member process.
